Habitat NI is holding a 'Prioritising Housing in an Urbanising World' event at Stormont on Tuesday 18th February 2014

Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland is holding a ‘Prioritising Housing in an Urbanising World’ event.

The event is taking place at The Long Gallery, Parliament Buildings, Belfast on Tuesday 18th February 2014 from 4.30pm - 6.30pm.

The key note speaker will be Kebede Abebe, National Director, Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia.

Adequate shelter is a basic human need. More than four walls and a roof, it includes sufficient space, tenure security and access to basic services such as water and sanitation. A safe and secure home provides more than protection from the elements. Studies show a positive impact on a family’s education, health and livelihood.

Slums, which are growing globally, are the most visible indicator of poor access to housing. By 2050, 70 percent of the world’s population is projected to be living in urban areas, with the total slum population doubling to 2 billion.

The event will discuss how the provision of adequate, affordable housing for the world’s urbanising population is integral to cities becoming engines of growth and sustainability. There will be a focus on Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia’s work.
