Habitat Ireland has partnered with Habitat Malawi for many years. The landlocked country, known as the ‘warm heart of Africa’ faces many challenges including an increasing risk of climate related disaster.
In Malawi, 4 out of 5 families live in poorly built homes made of mud bricks, dirt floors and grass thatched roofs. Homes constantly need repair and families are at high risk of disease.

The poorest are worst affected, including the 1.5 million children who are orphaned or vulnerable, largely as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
For thirty years, Habitat has been one of the few organisations in Malawi dedicated to improving the living conditions of families in need.
Together, with support from the Diocese of Meath and Kildare, every brick will help transform the future through homes or school based latrines which protect vulnerable children.
Bricks which will build homes and latrines in Malawi, transforming the future for vulnerable families and the wider community. Bricks cost 1 euro.
It takes 1200 bricks to build a three-roomed home and 300 bricks to build a latrine. Everyone, everywhere deserves a safe place to live and every euro will buy more bricks!

Malita's StoryIn 2023, Cyclone Freddy devastated communities across Southern Malawi, destroying homes and displacing more than 600,000 people. Funds from Ireland have supported families like Malita’s to rebuild their homes following the disaster.
For Malita, having a safe home means protection and comfort for her two children, Marriam and Davide. "I never thought we would live in a real house again," she says with tears of joy. "This home has restored my hope for a better future."
Habitat Malawi is working in communities, building new, safe, disaster resilient homes reusing the rubble that the cyclone left behind.
