Ryan has volunteered in ReStore Drogheda, even before the store opened in 2022! Two years on, he's still supporting ReStore every week. Read about his volunteer experience below.
I started volunteering at ReStore about two years ago. I came across an advertisement on Facebook, and I thought, "Let's give it a try." After visiting three times, I decided to stay.
The main motivation for me to keep coming back is the people. Everyone is very friendly, creating a positive and welcoming environment.
I recall a new couple with a baby who came in. They were able to furnish their home affordably with items from ReStore, and I could see how happy and satisfied they were with the assistance they received.
I bring physical strength, which allows me to assist people with lifting and moving items. Also, I consider myself a nice person, contributing to the positive atmosphere at ReStore.
My favourite task is interacting with consumers, showing them the various items we have. I enjoy chatting and helping them find what they need.
Volunteering at ReStore has helped me to develop skills such as assembling furniture. Moreover, I've had the opportunity to interact with people from different countries, enhancing my international communication skills.
What has surprised you about working in ReStore?
One surprising aspect has been the generosity of people who donate items. Sometimes, they may not realize the value of what they're giving, but it turns out to be quite useful.
The highlight for me has been the overall experience with everybody involved - the staff, fellow volunteers, and customers.
The most inspiring aspect of Habitat’s work is its global reach, addressing different challenges in various countries. The organisation's commitment to making a positive impact worldwide is really motivating.
