Communications Assistant, Sarah Simpson, reflects on our internship at Habitat NI.
By Sarah Simpson
Over the past two months I have been volunteering in the role of Communications Assistant at Habitat NI. As I am about to enter my fourth and final year studying Marketing, it was essential I gained some practical experience over the summer to put the theory I have been learning about into practice. Habitat NI was an organisation I was very familiar with, and the opportunity of a marketing internship was not something I was going to turn down!
Having covered a wide variety of topics at university, I was delighted to learn that my role at Habitat would involve a mix of different tasks related to marketing. I soon picked up how things were done in a fast paced environment and found myself strengthening existing skills and learning new important skills such as editing website content, conducting desk research, monitoring social media to name a few. It has been an invaluable experience and one I am very grateful for as embark upon my final year of study before entering the world of work.
The highlight of my time at Habitat has been working for such a great organisation. It has been amazing to see what goes on behind the scenes of a charity. What struck me the most was the impact the charity has already had and will continue to have on those living in poverty housing. It was amazing to see the sheer volume of volunteers that contribute towards the work of Habitat, whether it be the Global Village teams or the ReStore volunteers, it has been obvious during my time here that so many share the same vision to eliminate poverty housing and build hope for those living in the poorest conditions.
