As part of our Advent reflection series, ReStore Volunteer Co-Coordinator Clare Orr, writes about the importance of serving.
We live in a time when each moment is filled with things to do, people to see and places to go, but is important that we take time this Advent to be still; reflect on why God sent His Son and to prepare our hearts to respond to Emmanuel, God with us.
Jesus came to earth to serve, not to be served. He chose to live a life of humility, looking to the interest of others rather than focusing on himself. His life, filled with love and justice, is an example to us of how we should treat our neighbour and his journey on earth challenges us to live humbly and love greatly.
Habitat for Humanity offers volunteers all around the world the opportunity to put into practice the call to love others as we love ourselves. Thousands of Habitat volunteers all around the world are motivated to serve families who have been forced to live in poverty housing.
I am so blessed to be involved in Habitat ReStore, Lisburn. We have a wonderfully diverse volunteer team of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. As a group of people with different hopes and fears, joys and challenges, we look out for each other and care for each other whilst at the same time serving our local community. We hope that as we look back over 2017, Habitat ReStore has been a place of growth, restoration, renewal and of love for all who spent time here.
