We are therefore committed to protecting any personal information we obtain about you, whether you are a supporter, volunteer, partner or campaigner. We will treat each supporter fairly and according to your expressed preferences, and are committed to following good practice and data protection legislation.
We have updated Habitat NI’s Privacy Policy to reflect new legislation. It sets out how we obtain, use and protect any personal information you provide to us, whether online, via phone, text, email, post or in other correspondence.

When you connect with Habitat to make a donation, become a volunteer, sign up for our newsletters/ request other types of material/programmes, or you telephone, email, write or engage with Habitat via our website or social media channels, we may receive and retain personal information about you. This can include information such as your name, email address, postal address, telephone or mobile number, date of birth, gender, your employer details, if you participate in payroll giving, bank account details to process donations, history of donations, correspondences and other interactions with Habitat, whether or not you are a tax payer so that we can claim Gift Aid and where directly provided by you, your associations with churches or other organisations.
We also need to collect sensitive personal information in order to protect volunteers on local and global programmes and individuals on our schools programme. Information regarding this will be provided on specific application forms and parental consent forms.
By submitting your details, you enable Habitat (and when necessary companies working for us) to provide you with services, information and activities and to raise funds.
Website Usage and Cookies
Cookies are a useful way for us to understand how supporters use our website. When you visit our website, we will use cookies to collect data from your computer or other device, such as a smart phone or tablet. Cookies are created by your web browser when you visit our website. Every time you return to our website, your browser will send the cookie file back to the website's server. They improve your experience of using our website by, for example, preserving your preference settings so that you are shown information likely to be most relevant to you, and measuring your use of the website so that we can improve it. We may collect information from Companies House, the Charity Commission, and information published in articles, newspapers or social media.
Tailoring our communications
We have a duty to make sure that we're spending your donations wisely, and that means doing some research and analysis to make sure that we send you the most appropriate communications, including acknowledging your past support and actions, demonstrating accountability and impact. In order to work out whom to contact, what to say and when to get in touch, we carry out the following activities:

Major gifts require a higher level of accountability both in presenting funding proposals and in demonstrating impact. We may undertake in-house research to help us identify organisations and individuals who wish to support our work, using information donors have given us and publicly available records. We may also collect information on donors' interests, for example board memberships, hobbies, or articles in newspapers or magazines. We use this information to tailor our communications and to connect with potential supporters.

If you make a major gift to our work, we will, at the soonest opportunity, discuss and agree with you any concerns you may have about the personal data we hold and the methods of contact suitable for you. Where you do not wish to pursue such a relationship with us, we will not retain any additional, publicly sourced, personal data about you that we have used for this purpose.
Social media
Your settings or the privacy policies for social media and messaging services might give permission to access information from these sources. If we do access this data, for example to assess the effectiveness of our communications, we will not add this to your personal details that we hold. We advise you to check the privacy settings on your social media provider to ensure you are happy with the level of privacy you have chosen.

Consent
If you are a new supporter, on or after 25 May 2018, we will process your personal data on the basis of the consent you provide us with. You are free to change your contact preferences at any time by contacting us by telephone, post or email, as shown below.
If you donate, join an event or sign a petition we will send you an email receipt and or letter to acknowledge.
Our reliance on your prior support
If you are an existing supporter, as at 25 May 2018, we will continue to share information about the impact of your support in whatever way have requested. For example if you have made a donation, previously purchased goods or services, or partnered with us by volunteering, praying or campaigning. GDPR calls this legitimate interest.
Where you have previously asked us not to contact you, we will continue to respect your contact preferences.

We do not share or swap your information with any other charities or organisations for the purposes of their marketing.
We will use your information within Habitat NI for the purposes for which it was obtained and to communicate with you about our work and how you can continue to be involved, unless you explicitly tell us you do not wish to receive communications from us.
We may need to share information about you to enable your participation eg as a volunteer travelling on the Global Village programme. We will only share essential information with another Habitat for Humanity organisation to facilitate your participation. Habitat for Humanity International requires that all Habitat National organisations maintain security controls to ensure that your data is stored securely.
Sometimes Habitat works with companies to process your information on our behalf. We require these companies to comply strictly with our instructions and data protection legislation.
We will keep your information confidential except where disclosure is required or permitted by law (for example to government bodies for tax purposes or law enforcement agencies for the prevention and detection of crime, subject to such bodies providing us with a relevant request in writing).
We will hold your personal information on our secure systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity, eg we will keep a record of donations for at least seven years. If you request us not to send you marketing information we will keep a record of your contact details and appropriate information to enable us to comply with your request not to be contacted by us.
Where you contribute material to us, e.g. via our website or in response to a particular campaign we will generally only keep your content for as long as is reasonably required for the purpose(s) for which it was submitted unless otherwise stated at the point of generation.
Your Rights
You have the right to ask us to stop using your information according to your preferences except where there is a legal requirement for continued processing.
You have the right to ask for a copy of the information related to you that we hold (this is called a subject access request).
